There are a lot of Android devices having an issue where the audio stops working. Most of the time it is due to the headset jack sending signals that a headset is plugged in...when it is not.
My mother's tablet had the issue as did my Galaxy Nexus. For both cases, an app named SoundAbout fixed the issue. Hope this helps someone.
