My opinion is: Do not consider any VIA based solutions, whatever it is PC or Tablets. And please forget Any tablet based on Android 2.0 or below. 2.1 should be your bottom line.
As far as I know, Telechips based solutions will be strong at multimedia, TI Cortex-A8 will be good at internet surfing. I don't have much experience on Rockchip, so I can say nothing about Rockchip.
    FYI only.
    If I'm wrong, don't blame me. :)

only just started to look into tables, and am also having a difficult time comprehending all the options....

as I understand it, the telechips has been popular with the PMP devices so they are proven to be good at multimedia. but with a more powerful cpu like the one's in the cortex A8, wouldnt you have the option of being just as good using software?

The performance is highly depend on what application you use. The only shortcoming of Cortex A8 is multimedia. Personally, I recommend A81E. You can see the video on my list of it.
If anything unclear, please feel free to let me know.
    Thanks.
