Can somebody help me i cant get my touch screen on my tablet to work.

I have an Ematic eGlide X12 4GB android Tablet, that I bought off the street and when I touch the screen it doesn't do anything. Its locked with a pattern lock for one thing but even if I did know the pattern it wouldn't matter because when I touch the screen nothing happens. Do I need one of those special pens or was I swindled for a broken one??? somebody please help.
