Coming Soon: Android on the HP TouchPad by Pathik Shah | Monday, 22nd Aug 2011

Soon after HP announced that it would be dumping its PC business, it also revealed that it would be discontinuing webOS development as well. HP launched the TouchPad only a few months ago, and according to reports, its retail partners had been unable to sell around 90% of their TouchPad inventory despite significant price cuts.

While everyone was wondering about the fate of webOS and writing obituaries about it, HP let out another surprise.
It announced that it would be slashing the price of the TouchPad to $99 for the 16 GB version and $149 for the 32 GB version. In less than an hour, that announcement transformed the TouchPad from the tablet no one wanted, to the tablet that everyone wanted to buy.
While the TouchPad isn’t as good as the iPad 2, it still has some really good hardware – 9.7 inch display, 1.2 GHz dual core processor, 16 GB storage etc. There has been a mad rush for the HP TouchPad in the last two days. I haven’t seen such demand even for the iPad.

And here’s some more good news. A group of Android hackers, called the TouchDroid team, has announced that it will be porting Android 2.3 Gingerbread to the HP TouchPad. You can expect to see it in a matter of months. The HP TouchPad is a great buy, and with the developer community backing it now, it might turn out to be the best value-for-money tablet of all time.
