Does orientation detection have to be automatic?

Every tablet I've seen has automatic orientation detection to switch between landscape and portrait mode, but I'm not sure how to disable able it, or if it can be done. If I happen to be laying down and want landscape mode that would be a problem.
I am mentioning this before buying.

You should be able to do this in settings

[h=4]Step 3[/h]Touch “Auto-Rotate Screen” to check the check box and allow the screen to change orientation as you turn it. Tap “Auto-Rotate Screen” again to un-check the check box and lock the phone in portrait mode.
