updating android software?

Ok so I'm a total newb to Android tablets. I am a little nervous about buying a tablet that may not receive future Android updates (like gingerbread). I'd rather not buy one at all till that's a possibility, but have no idea it is already possible.

So I guess my question is: can an Android tablet be easily upgraded to the latest software when it comes out? Or will I have to spend another $200 every few months?

No guarantees on updates but you will have better luck with the major brands samsung
