Wandering aimlessly in the "root desert"!

Hello All,

I've spent the past week learning and exploring how to root and flash roms, etc. I'm totally inexperienced, but keenly interested.

At some point in the week, I was able to install a version of CM7, and then take it back to stock. That seems like a long time ago now.

Since then, I've been at a bit of a loss in terms of finding all of the software that goes together to make things nice and smooth (stable).

I was hoping to find a source that said, these items go together well (and now with 1.2 that is newly important it appears).

I found the following link http://www.android-support.com/guid...kernel-and-clockworkmod-to-emmc-updated41011/, which is the kind of thing for which I was looking. However, after following each step, I get a screen that says, "Read Forever", then the screen goes dark (not off), and that's it.

So frustrating, as I am following the steps, and it doesn't work. Can one of you who is experienced explain how someone at my level should proceed? I want to play, but a little success would be a good thing. I don't understand how these complete instructions simply don't work. And, if you have a link to a valid process for 1.2, I'll take it.

Thanks so much!

David

David, it is nice to see that you are willing to try things out since this is how gain experience but you can't keep jumping into things you don't understand and can't get out of. You have been down the restore road once and should now have all the tools and experience you need to restore again.

There is no source for finding "software that goes together to make things nice and smooth (stable)." There are really only three things that you need to flash ROMS 1. ROM zip 2. Gapps zip and 3. Kernel zip. As long as you are using the latest stable ROM and the appropriate kernel for the ROM you shouldn't have any issues. If you are using nightlies or betas then you can expect some issues because it is the nature of being on the leading edge.

If you have your backup from your last restore all you need to do is put in your bootable SD card with the back up file and then choose restore.

You can gain knowledge before you gain experience. Read these:

J5105P,

Thanks for the comments and links. I'll definitely review all of the materials (fully). Trust me, I'm now an expert on getting back to stock, so there is no problem returning home. My challenge has been getting to a destination. In the example of the link I provided, I believe all of the items fall under your three guidelines. That being said, they didn't work. I'll keep forging ahead. Thank you for your patience and guidance.

if you want to put a stake in the ground - go with cm7 7.02 stable + gapps + 1.3GHz kernel (i use the 4/24 kernel)

build from there - add netflix, thumb keyboard, tvshow stream, bluetooth gps, amazon app store, app planet
i also edited build prop and changed lcd density to 220

mine has been happily serving my needs now a couple of months now, no headaches, hassles

I've been running on this config, pretty stable and waiting for the .32 kernel to get to stable state. That would likely be my next update
