Does the google maps allow you to pre download maps for use with the gps? If not, that would mean the gps is not worth much since you only link up to the net via wifi.

If you use the google navigation which is built into maps, you have to select your destination before you leave wifi coverage.

Maps will then cache all the map info for your route. So even though you will be out of wifi range the navigation will still show where you are, and still give you turn by turn voice directions as you drive.

There are other map and navigation apps you can download from the market that hold maps for the entire country. They cost money, but might be worth it.

Apparently you can cache some of the maps and it will work from those but I don't know how much that would help. I'v used it for local trips less than 30 miles round trip and it keeps up well. Longer trips you would need a connection or a real navigation program with its own maps.
An alternative is to tether your cell phone somehow.

There are a few nav programs available for tablets that let you pre-download wide area maps so no wifi needed while en-route...

1) Mapdroyd- 100% free and works quite well on the A500. Very good accurate street maps, but no POI's, etc...

2) Copilot- Paid app ($5.00 for full USA map) More detailed with POI's and their phone numbers, address, etc that the free Mapdroyd doesn't offer. Goto feature works well.
Known issues- turn off "welcome to copilot..." welcome message and touchscreen sound effects to prevent FC's.
