When trying to update the software I get can not reach the server message.
WIFI is working.
I won the tablet from AT&T but have not contracted service with them.
Is there a way to update software without being a customer of AT&T?

Welcome to the forum

Android typically updates over the air (OTA) so it should work fine on WiFi. Can you otherwise browse OK on the WiFi? If so there may be something wrong with the updater app or with the update server.
