Extraneous Keyboard Symbols

How do I get rid of the annoying keyboard symbols that pop onto my screen inadvertently? I'm a USA user and only need a standard set of English keyboard letters, numbers and characters. This is for a Galaxy Note 8.0 Wifi only, GT-N5110, Android 4.4.2.

I don't need umlauts and all the variations of the letter "A" that pop up for some reason.

Change your keyboard. There are plenty of them on the Play Store and you're bound to find one that meets your needs.

Thanks so much! I'm digging the new Google Keyboard. I would have never thought to look in the APP store for so simple a solution (then again, my old brain sees the virtual keyboard as a piece of hardware with crackers stuck between the keys).
