Generic Android Tablet Connection problem

Hi there ladies and gentlemen,
I live in South Africa and have recently bought one of those generic MID tablets with
the Android 1.9 OS that probably come from somewhere in asia. Firmware version 1.6.
The company that I bought it from advertised it as being capable of connecting
to the internet via 3g usb modem, as the firmware has also apparently been updated
to support the huawei k3565, e220, e230, e770 modems.
I have the k3565 modem, and when plugging in the modem, it does power up and it does find a gprs network, but I cannot seem to establish a connection. I have tried all sorts of APN's and phone numbers, all which have been given to me by my service provider, but nothing seems to work. I have a sneaking suspicion that there is a driver problem or firmware problem or something.
As I understand I am also not the only one with this kind of problem.
Could somebody please be of assistance? I am truly at wits end with this thing.
Any help would be appreciated, for any other info needed just ask :), I'm happy to answer any questions.
