For the life of me I cannot set up my added email address for my att.net address...worked fine on my nexus 7 when I would go to my mail app..then stopped working..deleted the account off of my nexus..tried to re-add..keeps coming up with a error saying can't safely connect to server..etc etc..but yet my gmail is working?? Any suggestions??

Was there a change on ATT's end? Maybe you need to try different ports or a different server?
