What's gorilla glass?

I know that gorilla glass is the material of the screen most high tablets have;however, what makes it special?

It is a glass made by Corning Glass, which has a special coating, tempering and composition that makes it very hard, very sturdy and still light for mobile devices.

i would call it scratch resistant. It is VERY scratch resistant...but it can definitely be scratched and broken
