.xls attachments as winmail....

Hi,

I'm new to android OS. I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy 7" Tablet and am trying to find my way. When an .xls attachment is received via email how come its converted to a winmail.dat file? I'm unable to open - how can I receive .xls documents in their original format - am I making any sense??
