question on secure connections

I've been reading posts here about the need or lack of need for virus protection. Lots of food for thought. My question is about securing your browsing at public wifi spots.

I will be running Android 2.2. Are there built in features that will help secure data while publicly surfing?? What about apps? What about a VPN?
