Is it possible to install a chunk of maps to get to use the GPS feature without wifi or data service. I tried it once with my phone sim installed but had to remove it so as not to get overcharged.

I use WisePilot. It's free and so are the maps. I haven't used it too much, so I don't know if the maps are that great. So far so good though!

According to their own website, Wisepilot is not free. It only has a 5 day free trial:

Nor does it work without an internet connection(which the OP requested):

1: Do I need an internet connection to use Wisepilot?

Yes, you do.

You are not connected all the time though, only for a few seconds at a time when you for example perform searches, view maps or calculate routes.
