Mine is a a500 and no update.
Android version 3.0.1
Build # 1.104.02_COM_GEN1

No update but on closer inspection, my model number is a501; my build number is a500. Talk about fragmentation

Funny thing... model number and build number are both a500, while my model ID (not to be confused with model number) is a501... go figure.

Mine is the A501 running 3.0.1

I found this which might explain the difference, though I won't being paying AT&T to use their crappy service.

I just got promoted for an update. It started but then failed. It said something about incompatible device.

I'm in Canada...don't know if that makes a difference. I'm on build 1.016.5.

FYI, the US has a number of FCC barriers that must be lept over before these software updates reach us. While the rest of the world is getting a firmware update, the US can get it anywhere from a few days to months later, depending on what the update does.

I had to suffer through this with my phone getting Android 2.1 some time ago. The whole world got the update except the US. After 2 months of waiting, I finally gave up and flashed my phone.

There are no fcc barriers to releasing an operating system update.
There no hardware changes, no new radios. No carrier changes are involved.
