Unable to Update A500

I was given a brand new Acer A500 which has Android 3.0 installed. All efforts to upgrade to 4.0 or better have failed with the error message "Network coverage is currrently poor" even though the tablet is sitting next to my router. I tried to install the Iconia ICS upgrade enhancement from the Play Store, but that site states that the upgrade is not compatible with my device.
Any suggestions, anyone?

I'm having the same exact problem. Have you figured anything out to fix it?
