You want to check Settings / Wireless & Networks / Wifi Settings / Wifi Disconnect Policy.
It should be set to never.
Otherwise, you will miss incoming Google Talk events or anything that originates from outside your Acer.
Polling for mail, tweets, facebook, will still work if you let wifi sleep, but its just not a good idea.
The battery you save is not worth the inconvenience.
