Under this Settings, I have a message saying when it was last checked for update abd a "Check Now" button.

My question is - what is it checking and where? Is there a way I can examine a command or file which might
    enlighten me?

It would appear than my tablet is rooted, but I have no real knowledge of value this is to me, or if in fact it is.

    TY

As far as I can tell from your description it wants to check for firmware updates, (upgrades). If you are in fact rooted the update my cause the root to go away, which under the circumstances appears not to be a big deal. I don't know of a way to examine what it is actually doing.
