7/20/12 Today's book is The Lens and the Looker by Lory S. Kaufman.

It's the 24th century, and humans, with the help of artificial intelligences (A.I.s) have finally created the perfect society. To make equally perfect citizens for this world, the elders have created History Camps: full-sized recreations of cities from Earth’s distant pasts. Here teens live the way their ancestors did, doing the same dirty jobs and experiencing the same degradations. History Camps teach youths not to repeat the mistakes that almost caused the planet to die. But not everything goes to plan.

7/27/12 Today's book is The Entitled by Frank Deford.

Howie Traveler never made it as a player—his one major league hit and .091 batting average attest to that. He was cursed with that worst of professional maladies, the ill fortune of ‘almost.’

Now after years of struggling up the coaching ladder, Howie's finally been given his shot: as manager of the Cleveland Indians. But America's pastime has changed. Whether Howie can spot a small flaw in a batter's swing won't matter if he can't manage his superstar outfielder Jay Alcazar, a slugger with enormous talent (and an ego to match).

No crisis on the field fazes Jay and no woman off the field ever rejects him. But one night at the hotel Howie sees something at Jay's door he wishes he hadn't...and it leaves Howie with an impossible choice.

8/17/12 Today's book is Amberville by Tim Davys.

In this endlessly entertaining novel, Davys is able to take a bizarre premise, and create a world that mirrors our own. Eric Bear is a familiar character—a scared-straight criminal who’s trying to reinvent himself as an upstanding citizen. (Sure he’s a stuffed bear, but you’ll soon relate to him like you would any beleaguered protagonist.) Now the town’s mob boss—Nicholas Dove—coerces Eric into one last job. Dove’s life is in danger, and the resourceful Bear is his only hope. Eric Bear’s tenuous grasp on a normal life is slipping fast, as he delves back into the dark underworld he thought he’d left behind.

Hmm, on one hand sounds ok but honestly the stuffed bear part is a turn off. Anytime you have to proclaim something like "but you’ll soon relate to him like you would any beleaguered protagonist" that can't be a good sign. Are full refunds available if you don't like it? ;)

8/24/12 Today's book is Cold Kiss by Amy Garvey.

When her boyfriend is killed in an accident, Wren’s life is shattered—her first love is gone, and she’d do anything to bring him back. Unlike most teenagers, however, she actually has the power to change her circumstances, since she’s inherited paranormal abilities that allow her to bring Danny back to life.

Unfortunately Wren's perfect plan has a flaw—while Danny’s body is reanimated, the person she fell in love with has turned into a zombified shell. To complicate matters even further, Danny is now digging into the circumstances surrounding his death, and his actions could put Wren (and her family secret) in jeopardy.

9/7/12 Today's book is All Roads Lead to Austen by Amy Elizabeth Smith.

With a suitcase full of Jane Austen novels en español, Amy Elizabeth Smith set off on a yearlong Latin American adventure: a traveling book club with Jane. In six unique, unforgettable countries, she gathered book-loving new friends— taxi drivers and teachers, poets and politicians— to read Emma, Sense and Sensibility, and Pride and Prejudice.
Whether sharing rooster beer with Guatemalans, joining the crowd at a Mexican boxing match, feeding a horde of tame iguanas with Ecuadorean children, or tangling with argumentative booksellers in Argentina, Amy came to learn what Austen knew all along: that we're not always speaking the same language— even when we're speaking the same language.
But with true Austen instinct, she could recognize when, unexpectedly, she'd found her own Señor Darcy.
All Roads Lead to Austen celebrates the best of what we love about books and revels in the pleasure of sharing a good book— with good friends.

9/21/12 Today's book is The Retribution by Val McDermid.

Clinical psychologist Tony Hill has had a good run. He and detective Carol Jordan have put away scores of dangerous criminals at a rate that colleagues envy. But there is one serial killer who has shaped and defined their careers, and whose evil surpasses all others: Jacko Vance, ex-celebrity and sociopath whose brilliance and utter lack of remorse have never left Tony’s mind in the ten years since his imprisonment. Now Jacko has escaped from prison—even more twisted and cunning than before, and focused on wreaking revenge on Tony and Carol for his years spent in prison.

Tony and Carol have spent their careers protecting others, but now they’ll need all of the resources at their disposal to keep themselves out of harm’s way.
