I am seeing that the USB is mounted but I can't access it , for instance, if I want to retrieve a document from my USB by searching for it , the only option that comes up is to search my SD card only.

There are several possibilities for that. The first is a bad USB knockoff drive. next, a bad format. next is that you need to try a different file manager. Make certain it's formatted as NTFS or FAT32.
