Android Tablet vs Android Phone Prices

Can anyone explain the reason why Android Tablet prices seem to fall between $150 and $500 but Android phone (unlocked) prices start at $500+. Is this just because they CAN charge more in the phone market? Or is there a technical reason a phone should cost more?

Tablets (so far) have a different screen technology that is not as good but makes them a lot cheaper.
