Do I need to root Viewpad 10 to install apps? What about ROMs?

So after looking on the Internet I've read about "rooting" the Android phone.

Do I have to root the Viewpad to make downloaded apps work like Angry Birds, and, oh yeah, A FRAKKIN PDF READER!!

Do I just use an over the shelf type A-A USB cable to connect to the computer?

Next, what about ROMs?
