Gmail Push email with native email client

I'm new to Android and may appear to be missing something really simple here so I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

I've configured the native 'Email' client with Gmail account settings to support pushed email ie imap.gmail.com and imap is enabled within my gmail account settings. It seems I have to do a refresh or set a period between automatic refreshes for it to collect email.

However using the 'Gmail' client this works with pushed email as well as updating the status line when email has been delivered.

Any ideas why the 'Email' client is not working as I prefer this to the 'Gmail' client. If anyone knows of better email client then I'm all ears as I have only had the Tab for a couple of days with this being my first experience of Android.
