Description

This firmware is based on the 2011.11.12 shipping firmware of the Rocktouch RT7 tablet (also marked v0.18). It is a pre-rooted system image with major Google Android applications syncing, and workarounds to allow system writes for rooted users. It was created with the intention for an usable firmware that is close to the shipping version. This is Android 2.1.

The tablet is available at HOTMID at the following link:
http://hotmid.com/rocktouch-rt7-mid-rk2818-7-capacitive-touchscreen-android-2-1-wifi-g-sensor.html
It was also reviewed by AndroidSPIN's Simon Walker at the following link:
Quick Look: RockTouch RT7 Android 2.1 7″ Tablet

It is a 7" 800x480, multitouch capacitive shanzhai tablet with RK2818. The backcover is a single white piece of plastic with 3 slits for the speaker, and an aluminum frame

The RT7 original firmware was quite clean to begin with.

Version 0.1
This firmware will boot to English by default

Not tested extensively. No support pleaded for this firmware. I am not responsible for what you do to your tablet.

No further firmware revisions or features are planned.

Features
pre-rooted (Superuser, adb)

cifs and aufs modules were built from kernel sources for Archos 7 Home Tablet

Multiupload download

Download: Multiupload download

This firmware package comes with bootloader 5.02.

Run RKAndroidBatchUpgrade included above. To enter firmware download mode, you need to ensure that the tablet has been powered off complete. Then while holding the menu and back buttons, press the power button and wait till the computer detects the 'RK281X Device'. When the device is detected, the Rockchip upgrade tool will change color. Click the Upgrade button to proceed the firmware flash. The process takes about 2 minutes to transfer, after which the firmware will be flashed within the unit. The overall process takes 15-20 minutes to complete the install. You will lose data when performing this firmware upgrade.

To gain access to Android market, you must first connect to wifi, and enter your Google credentials. There is currently a bug with the Android Market install in this firmware where the Android Market license agreement fails to appear, resulting in failed downloads. In this case, you need to either restart the tablet, or close the Android Market running task (Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> (press the menu button) Filter -> All applications). Google Maps may exhibit the same behavior.

CIFS.KO Windows Network File Sharing Notes
nls_utf8 support is built into the kernel.
Just add iocharset=utf8 as an option

Choose to mount to /flash or some writable directory instead of what is specified by default, or it will not work.

You must insmod cifs.ko by going into menu options.

Append
I actually found some weird behavior with Market not finding anything even though it was connected to wifi. To workaround this issue, simply enable and disable Mobile data (you will need to toggle wifi as well), and this will magically fix Market.

Credit to naobsd (fun) for doing all the hard work of getting the tools(rkcrc, rkdump) setup to make this possible!
Also to the Hvdwolf @ ArchosFans wiki for the excellent writeup on the RK2818

Seems to work find on other capacitive 7" tablets with similar casings.

I removed RKReader and some associated files because I thought this would save space. But this removes the optimized PDF reading functionality it comes with. I might put it back later if there's enough demand to do so. For now this ROM has been rock solid for me, and I don't intend to change a thing.

A little sad that no one is replying :(

I do have reports that people have flashed this onto their Wopad and have good results.

Just a bug report - in removing RKReader (there were also a bunch of fonts that added up to around 15MB), I might have killed the RK2818's specialty to be optimized for PDF reading (only active if you use RKReader in the first place). I have messaged some people to help me investigate.

Hi,

I am using this ROM on my merimobiles Wopad and it's overall great. It is really snappy and stable.

I got one question since Iam just a user: what is the cause of slow typing or rather responsiveness while filling text fields on forums, facebook etc. I got this problem on every rom since the stock version and I tried almost every browser there is. Is it the system itself, hardware?

Thanks for any clue and for your great work on the rom.

Should be the hardware. I mentioned this elsewhere, but this platform is arguably slower the one in the G1. The processor isn't quite fast enough.

I use Dolphin Mini and AnySoftKeyboard, as those seem lightweight enough.

Since it works on the Wopad, it is very likely that it will work on the Suli SL-7, Milkpad, or Window-N9 variants as well.

Ok..

One last thing:

I tried to use 3g modem with my unit. Tablet detects the usb stick, modm starts flashing, but it never connects. I tried to set an APN, but after I set it and hit save, no item appeared at the apn list. Are there drivers for 3g modem included?

Thanx

This is a modified stock firmware. I do not believe I removed the functionality. It isn't compatible with everything. What do you have? There's a Chinese list for compatible RK2818 3G USB sticks floating around that I have not bothered to translate.

HOTMID shows how it is done in the following video about 40 seconds in:

I checked the pandwill table for compatibility: I have huawei e1750 and this dongle is supposed to be supported.

Really dont know what's wrong.... I tried to use different apn configuration tools from the market, different settings for the provider (o2)....nothing.

Thanx for help anyway

Thanks for this ROM, i will test and report back.
I will try to find the list of supported 3G dongles, also there is a new firmware from Rockchip for this device with greater support for 3G.

I have flashed with the customs rom but not sure if i did it right.

I cant get Market to download, get "Download error" all the time.
Tested to reboot and stop process via Settings.

Btw, is it possible to dump the original firmware and restore to default later?

I backed up the original firmware. Should have posted it: Multiupload.com

The Market is a little finicky. Maybe the new Rockchip update will help with that, or else using the new Market is a bit of a pain. My RT7 is locked in Airplanemode with wifi enabled (use Airplane mode wifi tool from the Market), and I don't have market issues right now.

I got the new Market to download after the on/off wifi moble trick (thanks xaueious)

I have a slight feeling the custom rom take longer to boot and drains the battery faster.
It may just be a feeling so i will make further test and restore to default firmware and compare.

As for battery drain, I did not add anything that would contribute to this other than the news and weather app, which can be scaled down in settings.

Here would be what to look for:
The main changes in this firmware include installing a few apps that would normally be on a typical Android device (YouTube, Calendar), and stripping some others.
Performance wise, disabling the swap (here is why: Swap and Compcache - CyanogenMod Wiki) and tweaking minfree to kill unused processed more aggressviely (How to configure Android's *internal* taskkiller - xda-developers) is the main change, which gives it real free RAM to work with. Everything else is unchanged from the original.

If I feel motivated enough, I will repack the PDF optimized RKReader and original market back in so it will be a proper firmware to use. But I consider those changes pretty minor, and am keeping my RT7 as is until I feel there is a need to fix this.

Hi xaueious,

i tried your ROM with my device a Debitel (4G-Systems) OneTab. It has a resistive touchscreen, so i changed the kernel with the one from my device.
Its boots up fine, everything works, market also working after doing the fix. respect and thanks for this rom / your work!

i tried to add some standard apps like facebook and twitter to the image and of course TSCalibration for resistive screens. i copied them to the system.img into /apps, changed owner to uid=0, guid=0 and gave RW to owner, Group and Others only R, like the other apk's in that folder. They don't get installed after first boot(TSCalibration works only one time at first boot, but isn't integrated in the settingsmenu(must framework be edited?)).

So my questions is, what do i have to do, that these apps get installed. I know that i can install them after first boot manualy but as i flash my rockchip tablet very often to test some things, it would be cool, to have my apps at first boot and don't waste my time with installing my standard apk's everytime. Integrating APK's into the system.img of other rockchip roms works(Lionhearts Wopad Froyo ROM, lefeudedieu Relax ROM at Slatedroid.com), but they don't use aufs.ko for getting write access to /system. Some infos about my device: Link
