Hi

Just wondering if anyone knows of a workaround to get the web browser to display a web server on the local LAN. It keeps saying that it cannot find the web page, it can be browsed by IP and FQDN but not by host name. For example, http://intranet fails, though http://192.168.1.1 and http://intranet.domain.local both work.

I've tried setting a static IP with defined DNS settings etc but still produces the same results.

Is this possibly a limitation on all mobile OS's as my Symbian based smartphone responds similarly?

Any information would be appreciated.

When you type myhomeserver.com or whatever into the URL bar, it attempts to resolve it based on your ISPs DNS server, which assumes its some public web site. It may never bother to look locally for that domain because your home server is bound to an IP address (192.168.0.0) that cannot be used on the open internet. So most DNS servers will time out. But typing in the numerical IP address, sure it will see it, because the TCP request isnt going to your ISPs DNS server, its hitting the local router, which see's that PC no problem.

If you dont have an old PC running Unix/Linux to act as an private DNS server, you may want to build such a server to handle the TCP/DNS requests of your private internal domains. Otherwise, it will keep sending those domain requests to your ISP, which will think its some public server.

Thank you for the reply elister.
Sorry, I did forget to mention some important things. I do have a DNS server configured and a record exists pointing intranet to the server hosting the site via IIS7.
The http://intranet page works using PC/MAC etc but this device as well as my smartphone (haven't been able to test much else at this stage) don't take any notice of the alias intranet. But they can see intranet.domain.local.
So I am interested in why it behaves this way and if possible, can it be changed?

Does anyone know if WinCE exhibits the same results? Might end up giving it a try.
